What makes Tomie scary is that she is not only a monster chasing victims. She brings out the ugliness already inside people: • People become possessive of her. • They compete over her attention. • Love turns into resentment and cruelty. • Trying to get rid of her only makes the problem worse, because she can regenerate and multiply. So each chapter is often less about “Can they defeat Tomie?” and more about watching a normal situation collapse after she enters it.
