I always want to try painting different things—to explore new subjects, play with colors, and see where my imagination takes me. This time, I wanted to paint something personal: my impression of California. ☀️
I’ve lived here for more than ten years, and this place has slowly become part of my story. Instead of painting a particular landscape, I wanted to capture how California feels to me—the warmth, the brightness, and that beautiful yellow sunshine.
That sunshine reminds me of Sydney, too. Different places, different chapters of my life, but connected by a familiar warmth. There’s something comforting about carrying a little feeling of one place into another.
Yellow became the heart of this painting. I wanted it to feel sunny and joyful, with big, flowing shapes and flowers that seem to grow in their own directions. The red and orange petals, soft pink, black dots, and green leaves bring a little playfulness into that warmth.
And of course, I had to include poppies. I love these flowers so much that I almost named my daughter Poppy! It’s such a sweet, cheerful name, and every time I think of it, I imagine something bright and full of life. These painted flowers hold a little piece of that thought.
This painting isn’t meant to show exactly what California looks like. It’s more about what this place has become to me after all these years: sunshine, memories, family, and a life that keeps growing and changing.
I want to keep giving myself permission to try something different. Not every painting has to look like the last one. Sometimes it’s enough to follow a color, a memory, or a flower you love—and see what grows from there. 🌼
